Some of you may not have heard our sad news: our city house was badly damaged in a fire on Monday, April 4. It started from the untended fireplace, and yes, just one careless act can become bigger than you THAT FAST.
Our hearts are broken over the loss of our dear pets, overcome quickly by the smoke; Sophie, the celebrity sled-dog and her little buddy, Monty the wind-up dog. We miss them desperately.
Alana, her dog Bunny and the cats were rescued safely from the second floor bedroom window. Following a brief carbon monoxide detox, we are all healthy, strong and grateful our losses were not greater.

Most of our losses are due to smoke damage, electronic copies of our photos and videos all seem to be retrievable, so we will be back in business as soon as we transfer all our files. And now the overwhelming task remains to document every item in our home [insert many !'s here].

Our plans for the Whitemud Arts Centre of course are on hold, now that we have two eco-friendly homes to rebuild.
We will post updates as we progress.

One of the many things that excites us about the WMC, is that Gladstone is on an active rail line. We are going to use the train to transport our music artists, and offer our Workshop programs with a rail option. As you can see from the clip, the prospect has Lori excited.

The giant load of building materials has arrived at the WAC. This would sure be easier in summer.
Watch this space- we have tentatively scheduled an Open House for December 19th 2010.

will be a meeting place, an exhibition space.
A place to meet people and learn things.

WAC workshops are for everyone.

Kids, adults, and seniors.

Whether you're an accomplished artist, enthusiastic hack, or rank beginner,
we'll have a workshop for YOU.

We'll offer workshops in a broad range of arts-

Visual. Audible. Performance. Inventive.

Tell us what interests you,

and we'll find someone to teach it to all of us.

moccasin beading, beer making...

it's all art as far as we are concerned.

We are undertaking renovation of a small house at

29 Second Avenue in Gladstone Mb.

Reimagining it as The Whitemud Arts Centre

The Awful Truth
The house, as it stands, is "not ready for primetime". We will have to put considerable work into it just to open the doors (if we had doors), but we’re committed and we’re patient. Now, if only we were electricians.

In the meantime, we intend to get the ball rolling with workshops and house-concerts off-site. Another way we can get going, is for you to tell us, which of our workshop topics “floats yer boat”. We want to touch base with the “invisible” artist that’s inside of you.

From our Curator:

I feel like a kid again. Not as young as in the photo (left), but certainly more cheerful. I am delighted to be returning to this place -- my favourite childhood playground.

While I feel like a newcomer to this present community, my history with this place spans more than a century.

My paternal grandfather was born in Gladstone, 110 years ago and tilled this soil all of his life.

My childhood memories are lush with images of life on that farm, where everything seemed bigger and more abundant than I could comprehend.

I stood on grandpa's barn roof, marveled at the size of the sky, and acted out the grand dreams of my childhood. I may not have recognized it then, but one of those dreams was to return to this place, to once again feel the Whitemud silt between my toes, and ponder the hugeness of the sky.
